I am schizophrenic and know from experience and from what i've been told that untreated schizophrenia leads to dementia. and having had a brief period of mild dementia at just 31! I feel very gratefull to the medication for helping my condition. On medication the effects of dementia mends itself so the functions of the brain return to normal.
Just 50 years ago and we'd all be in institutions. It's too scary to think of!EEK!

The positive sides are when you are able to resolve a complaint and a service is improved as a result. It is very satisfying when people indicate how differently they feel when their concerns are listened to and taken seriously.

In terms of negatives there are not many. As you might imagine we are often the first point of contact when people are distressed and angry. You do not need much experience before you are able to appreciate that indviduals are angry and distressed because of the circumstances they are facing and it is not personal There are very rare occasions when individuals are abusive and threatening and this can prove upsetting.

We both have strong desire to help people and these types of job enable you not only to provide support to service users but to ensure that lessons are learnt and services improved as a result. We also both like having direct contact with service users and hearing what they have to say.

Hi DK
I have worked in a number of roles, all of which have involved an element of complaint handling. Not all of these roles have been in the NHS or mental health, although most had a health element. In terms of training, I have a legal background.

Claire

I started my NHS career working as a health care assistant on a ward at my local hospital. My next role was working in a junior role in the a complaint departments of a district general hospital. Over the years I have supplemented on the job experience and training with Open Univeristy Diploma in Clinical Risk Management and a Certificate in Mental Health Law.

We overlooked to say that although relatives and carers can raise concerns which we will look at, in most circumstances they must obtain the consent of the service user. Without such consent, any response will be extremely limited. In circumstances where consent is not given, then staff would need to satisfy themselves that the person was acting in the best interests of the service user.

Hi there

There are occasions when staff from the complaints department are unable to respond to a complaint. For example, if an individual has issued legal proceedings or has stated in writing their intention to do so. Complaints from staff about working conditions would be dealt with by local manager or the Human Resources department rather than by the complaints department.

Hi James
If your query is about what happens if the Trust is unable to satisfactorily resolve your concerns, in England and Wales you have the right to ask the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman to review your complaint. This should be done within twelve months of receipt of the Trust's response. The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman carries out independent investigations about unfair or improper actions or poor service by UK government departments and their agencies, and the NHS in England.

You can contact the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman on 0345 015 4033 or write to them at: The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman, Millbank Tower, Millbank, SW1P 4QP.

That said, in practice if you are dissatisfied with a Trust's response to your complaint they will usually be happy to undertake a further investigation or to meet with you to see if they can resolve your concerns.

Hi Louise

This is quite a tricky question to answer, especially as sometimes complaints can be resolved informally on the spot or within a couple of day. In terms of formal complaints, each Trust will have its own policy and timescales to respond. In the past, the NHS Complaints Regulations required Trusts to investigate and respond within 25 working days unless the issues were very complicated. Although the new regulations only require Trusts to resolve complaints within a 6 month period, we believe that most Trusts have voluntarily retained the 25 working day target, for all but the most complicated complaints.

Staff in complaints departments should keep complainants updated about the progress of their complaint and whether or not, they will be able to keep to agreed timescales.

Dear Lewis

Everybody has the right to raise a complaint. In the circumstances you describe, we would suggest that you ask staff to arrange for you to meet with the Modern Matron who is a senior member of nursing staff, usually based away from the ward, who can either listen to the concerns or arrange for the Trust's PALS officer to visit you on the ward.

We notice that you are from Tower Hamlets and can inform you that the Trust's PALS officer visits the wards in Tower Hamlets every Tuesday afternoon between 12:30 to 5:00.

Hi Carla

If a complaint is about a member of staff, any investigation will be allocated to a manager. This may or may not be the manager of the person you have complained about. Any staff who are complained about will be asked to provide an account, or will be interviewed by the investigator.

Hope that answers your question.

Hi Sub
We understand how stressful it can feel making a complaint, especially after you have had a negative experience.

The first thing you might want to do, if appropriate and you feel able, is to approach a member of your care team who hopefully, would be best placed to resolve your concerns. We appreciate that not everybody, depending on the problem, will feel confident about doing this.

For those unable to do this, and looking to a speedy resolution to their complaint, the best person to approach would be the Patient Advice & Liaison (PALS) Officer . The PALS officer is unconnected to your care team and provides a patient centred approach to the speedy resolution of problems and should be able to approach the service on your behalf.

There will be times when you need to make a formal complaint either because attempts to resolve your concerns have been unsuccessful or if you feel the issues raised require a more structured approach with a written response. Then you will need to use the NHS complaints procedure which changed last year. We think it's improved because it requires Trusts to communicate and keep in regular contact with complainants, ensuring that they are satisfied with how their complaint is being handled. There is an onus on meeting with complainants if they wish to be involved in the investigation process.

It's commonly thought that you need to put any formal complaint in writing and for some, this will feel like a barrier to making complaints. At this Trust - and we believe at most others - staff in the complaints department are happy to take details of complaints over the telephone and we have a freephone that is publised on posters and leaflets around the Trust. We hope that this makes it less intimidating for people to complain. We feel that it's really important that individuals do so, so that Trusts can learn from negative experiences and improve services as a result.

Hi,

I wanted to know what the best method to complain is. I'm a person who often feels like complaining when having faced a negetive experience but am often put of by the stress complaining involves (when nobody listens or does anything about the complaint.)

Please advise what proceedure I should take when I want to make a complaint.

Many thanks

joke 1:Bra Types
A man walked into the ladies department of a Macy's, and walked up to the woman behind the counter and said, "I'd like to buy a bra for my wife"

"What type of bra?" asked the clerk.

"Type?" inquires the man. "There is more than one type?"

"Look around," said the saleslady, as she showed a sea of bras in every shape, size, color and material. "Actually, even with all of this variety, there are really only three types of bras," replied the salesclerk. Confused, the man asked what were the types. The saleslady replied "The Catholic type, the, Salvation Army type, and the Baptist type. Which one do you need?" Still confused the man asked, "What is the difference between them?" The lady responded, "It is all really quite simple. The Catholic type supports the masses, the Salvation Army type lifts up the fallen, and the Baptist type makes mountains out of mole hills

Andy's wife, refusing to give in to the looks of growing old, goes out and buys a new line of expensive cosmetics guaranteed to make her look years younger.

After a lengthy sitting before the mirror applying the "miracle" products, she asks her husband - "Darling, honestly, if you didn't know me, what age would you say I am?"

Looking over her carefully, Andy replied,...
"Judging from your skin, twenty;
your hair, eighteen;
and your figure, twenty five."

"Oh, you flatterer!" she gushed. Just as she was about to tell Andy his reward, he stops her by saying...

"WHOA, hold on there sweety!" Andy interrupted.
"I haven't added them up yet!"
